In 2017, after completing the PC key art, I worked on the PS4 version. The approval process was faster due to fewer heroes in the composition. Sony had a fixed UI template, so I adjusted Captain America’s left hand to avoid awkward overlap with Captain Marvel behind him. I also worked on this Captain America outfit. The face was based on the established in-game model to maintain consistency.
With a photography background, I set up the lighting manually, especially the rim light. This was during the UE 3-4 era, before ray tracing, so I lit what I needed, rendered in passes, and composited everything in Photoshop instead of relying only on Marmoset’s output.
Because the game was isometric, the in-game models were low resolution. For marketing, I manually smoothed the meshes Catmull-Clark sometimes distorted hard-surface normal maps, like on Captain America’s shield. PN Triangles helped, but some angular edges were still visible so so I cleaned them up at 8K to make sure it held up for print.
